blur / graham aside.. i could name "great songs" but none that mean more to me emotionally

i think it's quite personal, i mean a song could be technically more "popular" in terms of sales but to me the most important songs are the ones which have attached themselves to my emotions & become a part part of me, of my life..

whether it's through difficult times or soundtrack the best parts of my life.. to me these are the best songs of all time Embarassed

it's moments in songs like when beetlebum or 1992 goes into eargasm mode..

it's a mood thing as well really.. i'm equally fond of slipknot's vermilion part I & vermilion part II - both beautiful but polar opposites

i must have seen carlos santana
play a half dozen times
back in those daze

all prob'ly at Winterland Too !!

& once with John McLaughlin
some jazz-rock dood from England

that is it. it is a more serious -if you want to use that word- reflection... it is not a fan thing where some person lists 10 best songs and they pick 9 of them from their favourite band. it is about having an emotional involvement with a song. we can all list 10 fantastic songs... but appreciating a song is totally different than having a song that takes you to a point in your life. so yes...

see that is what i would include... songs that are special to you. i think when you start to list the top ten songs of all time you start to get into that =oh i must have a the beatles or hendrix's the stones.. i guess you could have both... the ttwo songs i've picked so far would be in my top ten no matter what

No matter what?

That has to be a contender.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xoke1wUwEXY

That Marmalade song sounds like they were trying to play A Day In The Life and went wrong.

... I think best songs and favourite songs are very different things. Wichita Lineman has to be one of the best songs ever written, but I'd not be too distraught if I never heard it again. Conversely some of the songs I love aren't great songs by anyone's measurement, even my own.

Tempted by Squeeze is a great song, but the single is a bit 'Huey Lewis and the News" but stripped down and in terms of lyrics and chord progressions and whatnot it's a fine song in my book. No one seems to cover Squeeze though, so what do I know?

That first song does nothing for me. I agree Wichita Lineman is a classic and i never get tired of listening to a song like that. I also like Tempted. It all comes down to what we prefer but I don't get this when you say that some of the songs that you love are not great songs - if you love them then they are great songs to you. who is this special judge that we must believe. I don't get that, some music journo or musician, fine they might be able to say what they think is good but it is an opinion, nothing more. Just as we are giving our opinion. because a guy can sing or play a guitar or write about music doesn't mean he knows more than the person listening to the music.

What I meant about me loving songs that are not great is that there's nothing profound in their lyrics, or clever or imaginative in their structure.

Take Blur, I can imagine Bettlebum and This Is A Low being analysed by some Oxbridge musicologist and they'd say "fair dos, those there are masterpieces." They'd not say about There's No Other Way or On Your Own, but I like those tunes just as much.

Bohemiam Like You vs Bohemiam Rhapsody. One's a great song, the other's a song I like, but there's little great about it at all.

I don't know whether I'm making sense or am just a bit odd.
